Effectively Mobilize Field Workers with Mobile Services

Effectively mobilize field workers with mobile apps on SAP Cloud Platform, so they can capture job data regardless of connectivity

Many industries employ workers to complete their daily tasks in the field with intermittent to no device connectivity. Tasks like installation of new systems and repair and/or maintenance visits, etc., can be challenging if workers are not empowered with the right tools.

The SAP Cloud Platform mobile service for development and operations can help organizations create and operate mobile apps with full offline support, notification services, superior back-end integration, and enterprise-grade security. These mobile apps can help organizations develop productive employees by providing easy access to relevant information for products and services offered, and by giving them the tools to access organizational information from any geographic location, regardless of connectivity.

Supporting Resources

A hybrid offline app was developed for this company and rolled out to field workers. Hybrid apps combine the flexibility of Web apps with the power of native apps. Hybrid apps are a breed of application that seeks to combine the flexibility of web apps with the power of native apps. A hybrid app was chosen for several reasons:

  • The solution needed to support multiple mobile operating systems
  • Workers needed an easy-to-use and standard user experience
  • The company had a team of developers with existing HTML/WEB skillset

The solution diagram above illustrates a basic architectural pattern of the runtime environment for extending an on-premise system, such as SAP S/4HANA, to mobilize field workers with the SAP Cloud Platform Mobile Services.

Bill of Material - SAP Cloud Platform Components for Licensing Considerations

Note that the following Bill of Material is for reference purposes only. The following table is only an example of the SAP Cloud Platform services and components required for this use case. Please consult your SAP Account Executive regarding your specific licensing needs.  Calculations below are based on 100 users. This use case is under the assumption that companies have configured back-end systems like SAP S/4HANA or SAP Business Suite.

Estimating BOM

Use the pricing estimator to calculate the required investment. Scale up or down as required.

Named users are individuals authorized to access SAP Cloud Platform Mobile Services. For practical purposes the estimations are based on 100 mobile users:

  • Estimating SAP Cloud Platform bandwidth: Consider how much data field workers will be synchronizing with this application. For simple mobile applications a 5MB of SAP Cloud Platform Bandwidth per user is sufficient. For 100 active users we can estimate that the minimum 10GB bandwidth/month is enough.
